Moving household goods from the UK to Romania after Brexit requires Romanian import clearance. Under EU Regulation 1186/2009, personal property may qualify for customs-duty relief when transferring normal residence; eligibility, exceptions and tax treatment must be checked with Romanian customs. Confirm the UK export procedure for the actual shipment rather than assuming every private move uses the same declaration.
- Provide an inventory, identity documents and evidence of your previous UK residence and new normal residence in Romania.
- EU relief generally requires at least 12 consecutive months of normal residence outside the EU and possession/use of non-consumable goods for at least six months before that residence ended; exceptions require customs review.
- Qualifying imports generally take place within 12 months of establishing normal residence in the EU. Lending, hiring out or transferring relieved goods within 12 months of the import declaration requires customs notification and may make duty payable.
- Confirm importer identification, customs representation and whether an EORI number is required in your case; it is not a universal requirement for every private move.
- Confirm UK export formalities with the carrier or representative, plus the CMR consignment note, parking, access and storage scope before loading.
